Does a website (e-commerce, forums, online communities) need a webhost to run? How about youtube.com, amazon.com, google.com, or yahoo.com? How do they work? Is it possible to own one without webhosting? I'm curious because I want to start a business... Thanks in advance!

If you want to have a website, you will definitely need a webhost. Webhost is to store your site content.

Yes, every web site requires hosting. The huge companies you mentioned all own thousands of servers and host their own sites. For most small businesses, paying for web hosting from a hosting service is the way to go.You'll find hosting services that are incredibly cheap, but do your homework - quite often, you get what you pay for. The two most important things with a web host are reliability (i.e., your site is "up" and running) and customer service. If you find a hosting service offering both of those to your satisfaction, it's worth it to pay a little extra.
