I'm going on a vacation from Washington to Arizona at the end of the month, and I was wondering the cheapest way to rent a car with great gas mileage? I heard a suggestion once of seeing if one of the rental companies has a car that needs to be returned to that state? I've never rented a car before so I'm totally in the dark, please help with good suggestions!

If you're renting this car because you own a "less-than-perfect" car that can't be trusted for a long-distance drive, consider contacting car dealerships. I once rented a mini-bus when we and another family vacationed together. It was pretty cheap, because my car insurance covered rentals.

I rent cars all the time. I rented one once for a one way trip and it was 400 for one day. TOTAL RIP OFF. If you are going round trip and you want someone else to drive make sure you have AAA and that will save you a lot. Believe me when I tell you that the best place to rent will be Hertz. Use your car insurance and AAA keep it for a week or two and you will come out a lot better then those other companies that claim to be cheap but really are not. Oh and join there Number 1 club it is free and easy and it helps you get an even better rate. Good Luck and Enjoy the freedom of the open road.

(So, if your insurance covered it, count yourself lucky!) Also, your vehicle insurance does not cover physical damage to the rental car...it only covers for the other party's damages IF you are at fault. So, basically if you wreck it, it gets in a hail storm, gets stolen, etc, there is no coverage for the damage to the rental car! You must purchase the insurance coverage that the rental company offers to you. Just an F.Y.I.To answer your question, I don't know which company is cheaper. I would call around to all and ask them for their rates. Some give a discount for renting for more than a day or two, so have the exact dates handy. |

First...car rental companies will not let you drive the car back to it's "home" location...they have people that do that for them (has to do with the legalities...what if there's an accident..who pays? are you their employee?...etc) How are you planning on getting back? Most car companies will charge a "drop off" fee...sometimes can be $$$$ (remember they have to pay someone to get their car back!)..Were you planning on flying one-way? usually round trip tickets aren't much more than a one-way...may want to just bite the bullet, fly round trip and get a rental car while you're there (in most cases you need to be over 25 with a major credit card...under 25 pays a premium!) Good luck!
