Graphic design encompasses all channels of communication - web design is a specific "genre" of design which relies on the creator having knowledge of digital functionality over and above graphics. Graphic design has other offshoots too, like printed marketing comms (where marketing knowledge is required). Corporate identity and literature are probably the purest and most recognised sense of the term graphic design. The key success criteria for all of these is the ability to "create" - to MAKE something, and not just provide a layout which relies on supplied pictures and words to form the result.

Is there a difference? In the computer field, you're kinda forced to wear many hats.

Web site designers and graphic designers have similar roles in many ways. Both use images, text, and typography to create an effect. That effect may be a call to action, a means of informing a selected audience, or simply the stamping of a visual image on a viewer’s mind. Both graphic designers and professional web designers understand how color can create a mood or set a tone. They understand the meaning of symbols and how they can be used in communicating ideas. Like any visual artist, they understand the importance of symmetry and balance among shapes, objects, and colors. Both use these techniques to reach out to a particular audience, to inform them or encourage them to take some action. Many work for marketing and advertising firms. Others work for the communications or marketing arm of a company or organization.Web Site Designers Limited to Specific MediumWeb site designers, however, are limited to a very specific electronic medium. They work exclusively on web sites, where graphic designers may work on posters, billboards, business cards, T-shirts, hats, pens, letterhead, and other marketing materials. All web site designers are graphic designers, but not all graphic designers are professional web designers.According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, a larger number of graphic designers are entering the field of professional web design. This means traditional graphic designers need to give up their silk screens in favor of a keyboard and personal computer. They will replace their paint brushes with software such as Adobe Illustrator and Dreamweaver. They also learn how to use hypertext markup languages such as HTML, XHTML and other web-oriented languages such as Javascript and PHP.While the traditional role of graphic designer is quite different from that of professional web designer, the two are similar in that they are both highly creative fields. Start getting the training needed to become a creative professional web designer—sign up for courses in Photoshop, web programming and web site design and enjoy working toward one of the newest careers to emerge in such large numbers in recent years.

Well web design you design websites. In graphic Design you don't. Normally if you're a web designer, like me, you also know how to write the website.

A Graphic Designer typically works on print collateral. This means brochures, ads, magazines, posters, fliers, and package design. Web Designer typically work primarily on web pages and HTML code. Also, the programs used by each are different. Graphic Designers: Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign...Web Designers: Flash, Dreamweaver...If you are considering a career in either I would suggest learning both. I have been a Graphic Designer for about 6 years and most people want you to know both. Those that know both have a HUGE advantage over those that only know print or web.
