I received a notice from California's income tax agency that I owe the state nearly $500 from 1997. It was the first I had heard of this. I called them. They said the IRS notified them that my income was under-reported by $200 for 1997 (I had one employer and reported what was on the W2. Strangely, I don't think I've ever been notified of this myself by the IRS.) California mailed a notice in 2000 to an address that was already old by 3 relocations in 3 states! They said I should have kept the agency informed of my current address. (As if I'm going to spend my life keeping tax agencies in different states posted on my moves (since 1997, that would be about 9 addresses). There are people you can hire to find anyone's address. Can't California put any of these people on staff?I told them I would pay the original $200 but am now living on a pension and could not afford $500. They said no. They want it all. I have no property they can seize. What should I do?

Check with legal aid, I think that they can only go back 7 years. If so, just ignore them....

Since you reported all of your income. check you records if you have them and check with the federal irs to see if they actually do have any record of 1. sending them a notice 2. from where is the income that they claim coming. maybe somebody illegal worked under your ss#.Don't hire a lawyer it will cost more than the 500. if you can get one for free go for it. The state can't just say that you made more money they need evidence. So I wouldn't pay any thing until they show where your income came from, as paying could be construed as you accepting that they are right.Additionally, if they were able to find you now then they should have been able to find then
