I am flying from San Francisco to Detroit in the second week of January, 2008 - should I buy my ticket now? $365 economy class, non-stop flight found on Kayak. Or will there be a fare sale between now and when I fly?

"Fare sales" are not something that is planned or advertised by airlines. They don't run them during specific time periods or anything like that. That is a pretty good fare, espcially for a non-stop ticket. Best to buy it now and get your seat taken care of. If you wait too long they could sell out your flights and then you'll be in trouble with much higher fares to get there.

There is no way to tell for certain. Fares are set by supply and demand. If airlines have too many empty seats, they put them on sale. If demand is high, they don't.The lowest fares usually have advance purchase requirements of 14 days or more, so don't wait too long. Tickets that are purchased at the last minute can be outrageously expensive. That's part of the frustration of dealing with airlines. A ticket that you buy today may be much higher tomorrow or it may be much cheaper.

It's really your decision. Do you wish to wait until there's a fare sale? Are you in a hurry to book your flight? It's not really certain when an airline decides to have a sale. They'll just announce that they've got a fare sale. It's just like buying books for me. Recently there was a sale at the bookstore. This wasn't my regular store but I happen to see a TPB of Supergirl Candor. I was tempted to buy it then & there. Later, I found the same book available at my regular bookstore & was surprised to learn that their price was much cheaper! "I was there," I told them. "The book was there. They were on sale." At the time, I had no knowledge of the book being available at my regular bookstore so I bought it right there. I was advised to check with my regular bookstore about books I see in other stores so that I won't make the same mistake twice. It's your choice. Do you wish to book now for $365 or do you wait until the prices are much cheaper? If you buy now & fares become less later, then you must have no regrets.
