we have a septic tank. The previous homeowners indicated that they were on city sewer and that there were no known problems. The first week (excuse me, day!!!) we started experiancing plumbing problems, which led to the discovery of a septic tank. Who is responsible for fixing this problem...us, old owners, or the real estate agent?

It should have been verified by the Real Estate person, Not sure what recourse you may have but it's apparent the former owner lied about your sewer. It should have been listed on the tax papers . In our town we pay for water and sewage.

Contact your title company and see what municipals were run... Who signed off on what and if the deal closed with misinformation included. You may or may not have to pay for it at the end, but upfront...you need to take care of your issue, I am sure.A long shot could be potential fraud if it is in writing...say the listing. That may involve the prior owner and/or RE agent. But, how far are you going to take it? Will a good cleaning & repair last a lifetime or is the system too far gone? I would need more info to even remotely suggest anything further...therefore, best of luck.
