Help! I've been assisting my boss for 6 years now and I just got another job offer that I'm accepting.. with the real estate market being SO HORRIBLE and my company performing many layoffs, I had to see what else was out there. Little did I know I'd get such a good offer somewhere else in a whole different field. My boss is (literally) going to freak out when I tell her the news about leaving. My question is -- how do I do it? How do I tell her that I got this job offer? She's been making jokes for the last month or so --when I go use my phone -- about me really talking to other employees about job offers, etc. That was never the case then - but NOW it is the case! I actaually HAVE been working a deal with another company and I don't know HOW TO TELL HER!PLEASE HELP me come up with something.*employers - sorry! She's been joing around with me about using my phone to talk with other company's about other jobs.I understand it seems easy to you guys. But it's not easy. At all. If it were, I wouldn't be asking for advise on the situation.I am her ONLY assistant. She doesn't have any other assistants or employees. This company is run with officers and their assistants. With the market being slow, som eofficers lost their assistants and some kept them. She kept me. I wasn't laid off. I was lucky. Well, now I'm just going to quit.

Just tell her. Maybe give her a while before you leave.

tell the truth. you found another job and are giving notice. no biggie. people leave jobs every day. if she don't like it that is HER problem. not yours.

She should know people will be leaving because of the bust. Just tell her this company isn't going where you want to career wise and you found a good offer. Worse comes to worse, blame it on traffic.

Tell her in advance. Leave your letter on her desk and just wait for her to call you. Or you may talk to her in the office and then hand her your letter. It all depends on her mood and whether your also a friend to her. Being a boss myself i know the reality that my people will leave anytime they received good offers. What i will hate most is when i am informed late or if somebody else informs me. Don't worry, your boss knows that you can't be working with her forever. Given a good offer herself, she will also leave the company. Accept whatever she has to say - don't burn bridges by saying nasty words to her. Just be happy with the thought that your going to work in a better company. Someday, when she leaves the company, she might need you again and offer you better opportunities.
