I just found out about some illegal activities in my workplace, particularly ordering of goods/services for personal use using the company's account.....I am an internal auditor, therefore I investigated the account usage myself, and narrowed it down to about 13 people who could be involved with it or know that it is happening.....the only problem is 5 of them are very close family friends, a couple of whom I have invested a lot in, not just our families, but financially, we co-own lots of real estate together.....I know I need to do whats right but am unsure of how to protect my assets before I submit my report to my superiors?

What you should do is ask those people you're close to if they know about things that may be going on. Depending on what they say, or who they rat on, you can take action. But some companies, like the one I work for, will actually look down on people taking action like that. Basically, if you know something, keep it to yourself and other people above you will find out and take action. You may want to warn those close to you so you can stay close to them. It's tricky, and not easy to deal with, but it happens everywhere you go man!

I guess I don't understand....you're an internal auditor and you're asking if you should turn in theft that you've uncovered? Is that really your question? And, you're wondering how to protect your assets that have nothing to do with the workplace before you turn in the potential thieves? C'mon. Sounds like you know what to do. Your family friends should understand that this is your job. If they don't, or if they DO happen to be the thieves, then you ARE protecting your assets from future harm by turning them in.

Well, in a court of law that would be considered being an accomplice...guilty by association. You KNOW about it, yet do nothing, you will go down with them when the crap hits the fan.Easier said than done I can imagine, but if it were YOUR company and someone else were in your shoes, how would YOU treat the internal auditor who knew and did nothing?
