search engines like yahoo, google extract information from say, cnn, nyt, cars.com etc., do these search engines pay cnn, nyt etc.?

Nope! All they do is, *find*. It rests upon *your* good morality and sense of responsibility and ethics to respect intellectual property. IIt's just like reading a book. Anyone can read Shakespeare. It depends upon *me* not to quote Shakespeare's words without acknowledging that *I* didn't write them.
