| I have a good background of Comp. IT, Networking, and Web Development and I need help on what I'll need to get me started. I know everything about making a website, however I don't know how to start one from home. I've always used other popular sites such as GoDaddy or Yahoo for my hosting, but now I'm taking into favor of a Video Broadcasting site. I know I'll probably be putting in about $20K into the project but if anyone knows a lot about this category it would help me out a bunch. Thanks. |

| First, you'll need to buy a dedicated server to run your web server. And I don't mean a desktop computer, but an actual server. AMD and Intel are the big names. You *might* be able to do it with just a personal computer, but if you plan on this project being big, a desktop computer is not going to be enough. You'll waste money on the graphics and multimedia card if you buy a desktop. You can always build it yourself, but it can get troublesome and end up being more expensive.http://wheretobuy.amd.com/servers.htmlhttp://www.intel.com/products/server/index.htmNext, you'll need to get a dedicated High Speed line. Google for T1 line, T2 line, DS 3 line, and OC line. Here are some results of my search:http://line-provider.com/http://www.broadband.com/Business/bandwidth.html(They're not paying me for this, so you might want to look around and check the prices first. They were just first on Google.)I highly suggest you use other hosts, the cost of you hosting your own server on a high speed line will be far more than if you use other hosts. A T1 line costs 100-300 a month and it's only 1.5mps. The faster ones go over a thousand. You can do it with cable or dsl from your ISP, but generally, they have something in their TOS that prevents you from hosting servers. If you want a dedicated server, I suggest you Google for dedicated hosting. Here's a page with some quick comparisons:http://www.webhostingsearch.com/dedicated-server.phpI know someone who tried to do it once. You're in for a headache. Have fun though and good luck. |
