I am still in my first year, first semester, so just starting out...but I wondering what are the best options..I'm thinking tax, real estate, or corporate law on the side of moneybut my interests lead me to criminal law and family law...so ...money v. interests...I just don't want to lock myself into something I will regret...either because I could have made more money or because I hate the area I'm working in. Any thoughts?

You just began your legal education and as your studies continue so may your interest. This is a misconception because you study a certain area of the law this is what you will practice for the rest of your life. My attorney for example practiced criminal law for 10 years before he entered the field of employment law which he has been practicing for 15 years now. Prior to my legal studies my interest lied in Family law and employment law. Although I still have some interest in family law, my true love is employment law. I have been in the work force for over 20 years and I can tell you in my personal experience interests and love for your work supercedes money. I have had the opportunity to earn somewhat decent money, but I loved my job and late into my career I had the opportunity to have positions of power with money. The money was very nice for obvious reasons, but I was miserable. When you graduate and enter the work force this is when you will be able to decide which takes precedence. Money or love of your job? My attorney per our conversations did very, very well as a criminal attorney but hated some of the characters he had to defend to earn a buck. He now defends those who have been abused in some way by a former employer and does not solicit or represents corporations. He is doing a job he loves and gets to defend the weak.
