I am currently taking a course learning the DREAMWEAVER, I am new to this web design world, I would like to become a web designer, start up my own business for creating ECommerce/standard web sites for customers. my question is, while dreamweaver could allow someone to create a decent web page without any languages knowledge like javascript, ajax, css ect, i wonder is it worth to learn all these languages if i could master my dreamweaver program.Could you please also tell me the disadvantages of the dreamweaver program. please help, all advises and tips welcome!!!thank you for your time!!!

I took a beginners Dreamweaver class years back and their was almost no code involved. But if you were thinking about getting further into web design you will definitely need to know those languages. Plus you should probably master Flash.

There are thousands of so-called web designers who claim this on the basis that they know dreamweaver. This is not web designing! You really need to learn the languages to be able to design serious sites.

Ok, If you want to be a web designer, you don't need to learn all of it, things like Php, AJAX, etc..... Those 're web masters job, not web designer's job.Because Web Designer job's to design the interface of the web. usually in html's enough.But it would be better if you have knowledge for Javascript , and AJAX[a little]. ART is the focus of Web Design. I suggest you to learn CSS and Flash if you want to be a web designer.In web master, you need to learn web programing language. Because you're going to make the site up. You must know the data base, and many other things.For example I build a site : http://www.srwmemorial.com/I have to know what is PHP, MySQL, etc. Mean While the designer make the interface, CSS.Feel free to contact me Smile

If you are only aiming to make a simple easy website then you don't but i highly recommend that you do learn html if you want to create a compuclated website.

Absolutely. Nor is it a matter of choosing between the two. So far, I guess all you've used in Dreamweaver is the default 'create a basic HTML page'. If you look closer you will notice that it offers to create a wide range of pages including PHP. Dreamweaver will prompt you with the arguments in PHP functions just as it offers prompts with the HTML tags. (That's in code view, by the way). When you feel up to it, your best bet is to concentrate on PHP 5 and MySQL. I see job specs are adding AJAX to that mix as well. Your skills progression should be: HTML, CSS, javascript, PHP and MySQL in that order.

Making a website involves TWO skills: a DESIGN skill, which is "making pages agreable to look at", and CODING skills, wich is (probably more important), "making your site to do what you want it to do, viewable in all browsers, an, above all, not crashing!".The first one is a art, and requires the gift of good art and ideas. It can be improved by techniques, but if you have no artistic gift, you have no chance (you can learn all painting techniques, but you may not be able to become a Salvador Dali!). Using programs such as Photoshop, Coreldraw or Fireworks may help you.The second is a science, where only LOGIC is required (AND the knowledge of serious skills and programming languages - not ONE, SEVERAL).If you learn DW, you are on the right track to make nice images, but you will NEVER become a coder.Remember, you are TWO persons: an artist and a coder.The correct technique is to start with your "art" hat, and design what you want to SHOW.Then you put your "coder"'s hat, and you make it WORK.As a coder, there are MANY languages you need to know, but you can limit yourself, by choosing a system: ASP or PhP. That is, choosing a "server type". They can be Microsoft based (Windows), or Linux/Unix based (LAMP).MS servers: learn ASP, JSP, Java, Javascript, and their associated databases. It is cryptic, full of Microsoft bugs never solved, and expensive to the final customer, as they need to buy programs.LAMP servers: cheap, open source, free of bugs and simple to learn. PhP, MySQL is all you need (and they are free).On top, and for all servers, HTML, CSS, Javascript, AJAX, and -unfortunately used and abused, Flash are essentialWith these skills and a good sense of aesthetics, you can become a (rare) good "Web design services".Once you learn coding, you will realise that DW was the worst approach to web design, and will bin it forever...Good luck!
