I had a Discover Card over 10+ years ago that I didn't finish paying (my bad) but hadn't heard anything from the collection (was NCO) agency for 6+ years. Just recently, our mortgage broker ran a credit report on me and the flood gates have opened again. Getting calls from Asset Care Inc. (a recording) asking for me (using my maiden name) and that "this is an attempt to collect a debt." After viewing all 3 credit reports, nothing shows on there. Can this still affect my credit? I thought it was written off and so I'm not answering any of there calls.

Likely the debt itself has passed the statute of limitations for collection - being as it's been over six years since they've attempted to collect. Check the FTC's credit page here: http://www.ftc.gov/credit

No it can't.Derogatory account show for 7-years from the date of first delinquency and it's illegal to re-age debts.Besides the statute of limitations is most likely expired by now so unless you admit that you owe the money or pay them anything there is nothing they can do just ignore them.I posted a link where you can look up the S.O.L. for your State just to be sure, credit cards are considered open accounts.http://www.bcsalliance.com/index.html

If you request a credit report the CRA's are supposed to provide you a complete report not a redacted one. Having said that, it seems to me that NCO is out of luck because of the Statute of Limitations. Check with your State on what they are. Go to BudHibbs.com or debtorboards.com. These two sites are a gold mine of information on how to deal with debt collectors and how to restore your credit. In the mean time STAY OFF THE PHONE !!!
