I'm currently in my 3rd yr of college, and I'll be graduating with a major in Business Economics in 4 years. I want to become a CFP eventually, but as of right now I'm not eligible. What exams would be most beneficial for me to pass (i.e. Series 6, 63, 7, etc) and can I take any of those exams while I'm still in college or do I have to be sponsored by a financial services company to sit for them? Any other advice that will help me get a head start on becoming a financial planner before I graduate?

You might want to intern for a company like Morgan Stanley, Smith Barney, or Merill Lynch your last year or semester of college. They will probably hire you on as a trainee when you graduate if you choose to pursue that path. They will pay for you to take the Series 7, 66, 31, and your insurance licenses instead of having to pay for them yourself. The only downside is that you have to go balls out drumming up business. Cold calling, friends and family, and what ever else you could think of. If you quit pre-maturely, they might even make you pay them back for the licenses too.

Every state has its own requirements... I too had to take the 6, 63, 7 and insurance exams... if you get with a good company they will pay for all of it. The company i am with is awesome... they paid for all my training, exams, everything. I would suggest however to get into a bank at first. They will teach you how to get business as well as get you established while still earning a salary. Most banks will give you a base salary plus com. while a lot of investments brokers make commision only. Need anything else let me know. I am a banker in Indiana

Besides the technical side of the business, I'd focus on the business side of the business. You may create a marketing strategy for yourself, pick a target market, specialize in a product, learn how to network, etc.Have fun.
