I feel that students back in the day (50 years+) had a much easier time studying and a greater wealth of knowledge than most students today. It could be because of their deprived state of not having the internet, many tv shows, etc. This to me seems as more of an advantage because it would lead them to allocate much more leisure time into things that matter. Today I see so many people with a lack of knowledge not because they are stupid, but because they have become lazy through all that the world has to offer in their interests. I admit I am a victim of the guilty pleasure of easily reached leisure time. It is a real problem for me and I am positive it has to be a problem for other people who want to succeed, but lack discipline in their endeavors. I feel depriving is a great influence. So I am wondering what do most of you think about the way students progress in todays educational environment?(In my defense I have gotten a 143 on the stanford-binet, so I don't think I'm stupid)

Things are not so different. Those with the discipline to do so succeed, and those who don't serve fries. As far as the Internet goes, it doesn't take any less time to properly research something than a 1950s trip to the library would. Now you need to spend so much more time verifying information that it equals out.So again those with the initiative to make sure they are doing things right produce the more accurate product and the customer (the teacher in this case) should be able to tell the difference. Not much different than the way teachers would make sure a student wasn't copying from an encyclopedia in the 50s.

i agree. a lot don't want to because of all the tecno stuff they would rather do. stick a kid in an empty room with homework, no tv, pc, or cell phone. they will get it done in no time.P.S. I have no doubt that internet is good.. i use it sometimes to help get my studies done and get clues to problems, but that is AFTER i finish everything I have been assigned to do.

well I don't think I am stupid either but another thing about the people who lived back then most of them were living in their history so it was much easier but people had tv 50 years ago so that should be stripped away and they were not educated about the same things we are although same format not same context

I'm a high school teacher so I see this every day. You are right, a lot of students are lazy and even apathetic. It definitely isn't because they aren't smart. I do think a lot of it has to do with our growing technological advances. It is harder to engage students and keep their interests because we are competing with TV and video games that are so fast-paced, students' attention spans aren't that long. I think parents need to play a big role in teaching the students self-discipline and limiting what they have access to, so they learn to use them in moderation.
