Sophia in the following answer that I got from her. I can understand her point!Religious fanatics are mostly emotionally and mentally weak people. They have a hard time dealing with turbulence's of every day life, so religion offers them a constant support. It must be nice to be able to blame all of your actions on God, so you do not have to take responsibility for them. They also enjoy getting together with others like minded people: their strength is in numbers. They gladly give up their ability to think as a payment for sense of belonging. Being led by the nose by power hungry religious leaders is their every day reality. However, intelligent and self assured individuals could never partake in an arrangement like that. Because we are used to question everything.

You've obviously never read the book of Galatians, or Ecclesiastes.God calls his followers to use the intelligence the HE gave us to seek out the truth for ourselves and not blindly follow.

Although I think your statement has some points, I don't believe it applies to everyone. I am religious, I am Catholic. I don't surround myself with like minded people, in fact, I am usually way outnumbered by athiest, Muslims, and Buddhist, and I get along with all of them. I respect their beliefs, and I believe they respect mine as well.I do not let any power hungry religious leader lead me astray, I have a personal relationship with Jesus. I do not commit sins and then go to Church and confess, just to do it again. I try to be the best human that I can be, whether that be sponsoring a child, donating money to charities (I hardly donate to churches, but I do once in a while). I do not blame actions on God...that's crazy. I blame actions that people make on...well other people. I do however like you question pretty much everything I encounter. It's hard to comprehend everything in the universe. For instance the more you study about Astronomy, how quasars work, why they pulse certain ways. Or why how perfect the sun had to be in order for the Earth to exist...it's all either a huge coincidence or something else is working.I prefer to stand out, and not have strenght in numbers. Yes, I agree with you that religious fanatics are usually emotionall and mentally weak people, but regular religious people usually aren't. I wouldn't kill in the name of God, because God wouldn't want me to kill, but I would never deny my belief in Christ. I respect your opinion and I think it brings some good points. I hope others aren't offended by this, but rather see that a personal relationship and understanding with God is better than to blindly follow possible wrong religious leaders.

All religions have gone way too far. Believe in a creator, and study science to understand how he created. Take heed to the advice of those extraordinary folks like Jesus and Mohammad, who shared with us divinely inspired messages on morality, but please don't elevate them to God status. Feel free to call God any name you please and pray in any way you feel comfortable doing, and don't persecute others. Live morally and ethically, not harming people for profit like big companies do. That's about all I know.

First, you should examine your OWN Prejudices. Your question seems to streotype religious people as fanatics. Dr Martin Luther King was religious (in fact, an ordained minister), would you say he was emotionally and mentally weak? St Thomas Aquino? Many of our founding fathers, including George Washington were religious, believed in devine guidance, and asked God for help and strength. That didn't make them weak. Eienstein actually belived that there HAD to be a God based on his knowledge of the universe. Most religious people do not blame God, but rather look towards God for Guidance and strength. Not a bad thing. People who are religious don't give up their ability to think, in fact many of the best Universities were founded and are run by religious institutions (Notre Dame, Villanova, Georgetown, SMU, etc) If you read the Bible, you will find that MOST of the people in it are not only wise, but question God all the time. In the Judeo-Christian tradition, knowledge and wisdom are looked at as good things and respected, as is the ability to think and make your own decisions. As for getting togather with like minded people and believing in strength thru numbers. That is a human trait, we are a social being and will naturally look for others that we feel comfortable to be around. If you really think you are so intelligent and question everything, than I ask you, what have you based your impression of religious people on? If you have only based it on what you have heard on the news or other people, than it is YOU who has given up the ability to self thought. I suggest you go out and check out various religous groups, keeping an open mind, and see what good they also do. And remember, just because they don't think like you, doesn't mean they are wrong. The Comminists thought just like you in the early part of the 20th Century, they turned out to be just as bad, or even worse than some of the religious groups they were against.
