My husband and I have recently decided to move back to the area in which he grew up. It is 7 hours drive away from where we live now. Therefore, we both have to find new jobs and buy a new home. The logistics of this move are daunting, but I know that others must have done this before. We are focusing on my husband getting a job first and then moving in with my in-laws (argh) until we sell our current house and I can get a job. Any tips on the logistics of this move? Moving services? Selling our own house...etc?

You are planning well. I moved from Los Angeles, Ca to Tampa, FL 4 years ago. I sold my house (thankfully) before I left. I used a moving company that offered 'storage' because I needed to live with my uncle until I found a house. In today's housing market - it may take a few months to actually sell your home; longer if your area is particularly saturated with inventory of homes. You may need to consider renting your current home IF maintaining the mortgage is a financial hardship. I packed away everything I absolutely did not need - space will be limited at your temporary housing (in laws). I had 3 weeks of clothes, toiletries and laptop. Thankfully, I did not have my son yet. if you have kids - pack whatever you need for them.Good Luck -

by far the best way to do this and the least disruptive is1. Let your husband get a job there first.2. Once he has an income again find a cheap rental home and let him find it or maybe you go over there for a weekend and search together for a house temporarily.3. Find a reputable removalist ask around in your area and get as much advise as you can.4.during this time have your house on the market its not easy but you can do it and at least its 7 hours drive away and not another country like it was for us when we moved from NZ to Aussie

I moved 2,600 miles a few years ago. Daunting is a good word for it.First, pare down everything. Have a huge tag sale, give stuff to friends and family, donate to SA or Goodwill. If you are a packrat, have someone help you. Start this now. Then start packing. It takes forever, so get boxes from the liquor store, grocery store, etc., etc.. They are happy to give them away, call ahead and pick them up when you say you will. Start with your out of season stuff, things you rarely use and can live without for awhile. Label everything in terms that make sense. Some people go into an elaborate system of numbers and letters, somehow I think "small kitchen appliances" makes more sense than K-19.Work on finding jobs. Start putting in resumes and getting interviews lined up. Ask employers if your husband can interview initially over the phone or by webcam. Can he move first and stay with the in-laws while you get everything ready to go?Moving services are notoriously unreliable. You may want to consider mobing things yourselves. Budget, U-Haul and such have great cost calculators on their website. Rent the next biggest truck from what you think you'll need. ;-)List your house about a month before you are ready to go. Hopefully things in your market are selling! Warn your Realtor that you are getting ready to move and the house may not be fabulous at all times with the move pending so they can advise agents that will show the house. When you are getting close, get a change of address packet from USPS. That way your mail will follow you. Can you get a bridge loan where you can buy a new house while yours is on the market? I'd much rather do this than move twice. Or live with my in-laws. Or worse, my parents!Good luck to you!

Sounds like you're going to have your hands full! I am an agent with Coldwell Banker, and can help you find someone to sell your current home, help you shop for a new one, arrange moving services, etc., no matter where you live or where you're moving. We have a nation wide network of vendors, sort of our own Better Business Bureau. Give me a call at 770-803-7254 or email at Jason.Horgan@ coldwellbankeratlanta.com
