This is a "what if" scenario: I interview for a position that is located in a city that is 900 miles away. I get offered the position. When do you think they would expect me to start? I know that I would have to pack up and move. If they offer relocation assistance, would that effect the date of the first day on the job? What type of relocation assistance do most companies offer? What if you own a home that may take a long time to sell? Thanks in advance for as much information as possible!

You need to inquire what their relocation policy is.It varies by Company from -0- to U-Haul to Packing moving and unpacking from a carrier.Very few jobs, but there are some depending upon level that offer assistance in selling and buying a house. The only ones that can answer this question is your employer.

Different companies offer different relo help. All of this is negotiated when you are getting ready to accept the job. Some offer moving expenses and pay for you to stay in a hotel while you are looking for a new home. You can move while your house is on the market. Take our a balloon mortgage or a bridge loan for the new house. All of these expenses should have been considered when you are negotiating salary with the new employeer.

Most compamies offer certain amounts to cover for your relocation. Depending on what has been agreed with them they'd normally ask you to be ready after about 1 month. Unfortunately the relocation time is not covered by your employment date.
