I'm designing a website for a church, and I have several pictures on there of members of the congregation, childrens' church, etc... My question is, do I need to get them to sign something in order for their (or their child's) pictures to be posted on the website? Are there any laws that say I have to do so, or can I just post the photos on the website without their permission? At first I thought it would be a definite that I would need to get them all to sign something, but then I thought about it, and people post other people's pictures on MySpace, Facebook, etc... all the time without their permission. But I dont know, I know the people would not mind, it would just be such a drag to have to get each and every one of their permissions...I am the photographer, so pretty much all of these pictures have been taken by me... =)

There's no law, but if they see it they may ask you to remove it, which you have to do.I would get permission for the kids, though. No law, again- but courtesy.

I don't know what the law says, but when I worked for my community newspaper we always got the subjects of our photos to sign permission slips. Exceptions were made for photos of crowd scenes or breaking news.I do know that you can't post professionally-taken photographs without permission. For example, school portraits are copyrighted.

the only reason you would need someone to sign giving permission for their photo's use is if you were making money off that photo. for example when i did some modeling for a clothing website the photographer had me sign a paper saying that they had my permission to use the photo in a way that could make them money (advertising) without risk of me suing for that money.photos that are just being used for display purposes on a website shouldn't need anything signed. however it is a good idea to get verbal consent, especially for the photo's including children. this shouldn't be much of a problem though, as most people who have a problem with you using their photos wouldn't have let you take the pictures in the first place.
