| What is the best language or fundamental language to gain a strong understanding of web design? What would be the next step (intermdiate) to build from the basics? |

| In this order:HTMLCSSJavascript (not to be confused with Java)php or other scripting languageAlso, a firm understand of web standards, web usability, color theory, and use of some basic graphical programs like photoshop or the GIMP. If you want to add database support also learn basic SQL and some fundatmental knowledge of a database such as MySQL.In the end...you may devote time to learning some other technologies like Flash, DHTML, the DOM, and AJAX |

| All web designers have to know basic HTML (Hypertext Markup Language). From there, depending on what you are designing, move onto CSS / Java |
