I've tried this with both the latest version of IE and Firefox. Whenever I do a search (or maybe two), I suddenly can't use the internet for the most part. I can access my school email and AIM (not MSN).I asked a friend and he said it had something to do with ports but had no clear answer to solve my problem.

What version of Windows are you using? Do you have any third Party Firewalls installed (ZoneAlarm)? When you can't use the Internet can you still ping?
