On the Market: New-ish 4-Bed Bernal Heights House Goes for Maximum Pamperage

March 22, 2010 in Uncategorized

This “sensational” 4-bed, 3.5-bath Bernal Heights house hit the market a few days ago. It’s got a “serene Zen garden” (though by Zen they might just mean “peaceful”), a sauna and Japanese soaking tub, Ethernet wiring, a three-level dumbwaiter, and a master bedroom with panoramic view and another (?) hot tub. The living room staging gives it a mid-century modern air, but the house was actually built in 2006. It totals 2,318 square feet and is asking $1,595,000.

Solar City: As Mojave falls out of favor…

March 22, 2010 in Uncategorized

2010_03_centralsolar.jpgAs Mojave falls out of favor for mega-solar projects, Central Valley’s taken the lead. A large swatch of land that’s become too dry to farm is now the “perfect site” for a solar farm that’s roughly the size of San Francisco, and could generate a gigawatt of power. That’s a hell of a lot of solar panels. [CBS 5]

Big Move: Warriors Could Move to San Francisco and Get Mission Bay Stadium

March 22, 2010 in Uncategorized

2010_03_warriors.jpg

The world of Golden State Warriors fans exploded this morning with an announcement that the team is officially seeking a new owner— a turn of events, of course, that follows rumors last year that a new owner would seek to move the team to San Francisco and build an arena “downtown.” Back in October, it was still wild-speculation season, even if the nugget was grounded by one fairly confident-sounding sports columnist. According to the Merc, there are a number of people in the running to snap up the Warriors, including Larry Ellison and 24 Hour Fitness founder Mark Mastrov. The one thing “almost all” these potential new owners have in common: they want to move the team to San Francisco, and build a privately financed arena — brace! — in the Giants parking lot south of AT&T Park. That might just be news to the Giants and their Mission Rock development partners, who are still planning a massive (if slightly scaled down) neighborhood-making project there — one that would likely need significant reworking to accommodate a basketball stadium. Seatbelts: buckled.

Animaltecture: Michelle Kaufmann Building a Hummingbird Habitat in the Presidio

The FOR-SITE Foundation, the local nonprofit that commissioned the 90-foot “Spire” installation in the Presidio in 2008, is launching another Presidio art project this May. “Presidio Habitats” will be comprised of a number of conceptual art-cum-animal habitat projects, the first of which we get a peek of today on Michelle Kaufmann’s blog. The prefab and green architect has apparently been keeping busy since selling off the designs for her modular homes — this morning she posted her concept for a hummingbird habitat strung together from rusted and sawed off steel pipes. The varying heights of the pipes “create angles and new land forms changing the planes of the existing ground to maximize the play and flights of the hummingbirds while they are feeding on the flowers and in drinking in the cascading water fountains.” Anything that maximizes the play of hummingbirds is good in our book. According to FOR-SITE’s site, the projects will stick around for a year.

March 22, 2010 in Uncategorized

It’s actually a floor below the penthouse, but as plugged-in people know, two-bedrooms at The Hamilton are rather rare and as such 631 O’Farrell #2001 managed to catch our attention, especially seeing as how it is the highest of the…

Storefronts in Storefronts: While Art in Storefronts moves on…

March 22, 2010 in Uncategorized

2010_03_fakebusiness.jpgWhile Art in Storefronts moves on from its “successful first round” and onto Chinatown, a town in the U.K. has done one better with “fake businesses.” The “flat pack” simulations of various shop types help passersby imagine a day long past (or perhaps coming soon!) where streets are filled with actual businesses, rather than their discarded shells. Even pretend is better than nothing. [BBC, previously]

On the Market: 2-Bedroom Loft in Adele Santos-Designed South Park Building

March 22, 2010 in Uncategorized

A few months ago we caught an open-air shower on the deck of 188 South Park’s penthouse unit — this past weekend, a 2-bed, 2-bath unit in the Adele Santos-designed building has also hit the market. The 1,578-square-foot tri-level loft might owe some of its “architecturally stunning”-ness to its Muji-style minimal staging, with all that smooth smooth buttery whiteness — which is frankly kind of nice after so much IKEA art. It’s got two parking spaces, HOAs of $300, and an asking price of $1,250,000.
