Priceupper: El Cerrito Hills: Mid-Century Living Now $240,000 More

September 9, 2010 in Uncategorized

Was: $1,155,000
Now: $1,395,000
You Lose: $240,000

When you’ve been on the market for 341 days and pricechopped to $1,155,000, sometimes it’s best to change realtors and come up with a new strategy. We don’t know about the strategy part, but that’s what happened to this 4-bed/2.5 bath in the El Cerrito Hills we wrote about last July. If you’ve ever aspired to live the Mad Men (Suburban Division) life it’s now going to cost you $240,000 more- the house was re-listed and priceupped to $1,395,000 three days ago. Designed by Ratcliff & Ratcliff and built in 1958. Still has the same spectacular views and indoor pool, plus that Brady Bunch House-on-steroids-vibe.

Weekend Retreats: Sonoma County: Modern Cottage & Ocean Views $1,495,000

September 9, 2010 in Uncategorized

Looking for a getaway? This 1-bed/1-bath guest cottage on 23 acres with ocean views in Occidental strikes us as pretty close to perfect for $1,495,000. The main house was never built, but the septic system is in place for a 3-bed structure. Reassuring, and frankly, who needs it? We’d rather put in a swimming pool and have our friends set up tents. No clue as to why there’s no main house but the cottage and the black wedge of a garage/shed were designed by Los Angeles architect Frederick Fisher, along with a garden by eminent horticulturalist and landscape designer Roger Raiche. About twenty minutes west of Sebastapol.

9-7-10BART.jpgAre you tired of constantly bitching about BART’s nasty seats and its terrible hours? Then we have some good news for you! BART is “officially one of the quietest transit systems in the country, according to a study by the Federal Transit Adminstration.” Now stop complaining and go take a nap on the Dublin train. Pricechopper: Grandma Decor Galore in Cow Hollow

September 9, 2010 in Uncategorized

Was: $4,850,000
Now: $4,450,000
You Save: $400,000

Listed in June for $4,850,000, this 4-bed, 3.5-bath, 2,980 square foot home just chopped off $400,000, bringing its asking price down to the Jack in the Box dollar menu cost of $4,450,000. This is the home’s “1st time on market in 68 years,” and its interiors reflect that. Country grandma gone crazy? Most definitely. Take a look at the guest bedroom with the two twin beds. And might we add… once inside, doesn’t it feel a bit McMansionish? Especially that all-pink marble bathroom? And how about that pink carpet in the hallway and on the stairs? And why do we all of the sudden want homemade chocolate chip cookies and a glass of milk?

34th America’s Cup: Will Sail for Development Rights

September 9, 2010 in Uncategorized

2010_09_07_beale1.jpg

It’s still vague, but the America’s Cup may yet have a future in San Francisco. In the most interesting news in sports here since the Olympic bid saga, The City is offering development rights along the Embarcadero at Piers 30-32 and 50 in exchange for infrastructure. Long-term lease arrangements have not been worked out, but the local organizers (ie some entity of the BMW-Oracle team) would fund the rehabilitation of the piers which are structurally not much good for anything except parking lots. Plus dredging. The most recent plan was a facility for those nasty, polluting cruise ships. We predict nothing except some uproar over the dredging and an uptick in interest in units at The Watermark. Which suddenly isn’t looking so lonely.

Set Your DVR: Burnham was a paradox: politically progressive…

September 9, 2010 in Uncategorized

Burnham was a paradox: politically progressive but conservative in taste; a tough businessman and a Swedenborgian mystic; a pragmatist and a dreamer; and a complex man both efficient and indulgent. The fascinating PBS biography of Daniel Burnham, epic planner, whose sweeping redesign of San Francisco went up in smoke one day in 1906. Also, who knew he redesigned Manila?
