Window Havoc : Fail Whale For 1355 Market Street Window

May 25, 2011 in Uncategorized

5-23-11window.jpgA reader altered us to a a bit of scare at 1355 Market Street, which is the future home of Twitter. At around 3pm, a window pane blew from its window frame on the 11th floor, above 9th Street where Walgreens is located. According to San Francisco Furniture Mart security, heavy winds were responsible for the incident. The triangular-shaped pane of glass fell eleven stories, hitting parked cars on 9th Street below, security told us. The SFPD and SFFD were immediately at the scene to remove the debris, and confirmed that no one was hurt. [Curbed Inbox]

Talkin’ Tourism: 1,100 travel tour operators from 70…

5-23-11bushman.jpg1,100 travel tour operators from 70 countries are about to be wined and dined by the San Francisco Travel Association, which is a local business group that promotes tourism. That’s right, SF is hosting The International Pow Wow conference (Ed. note: we can’t make this stuff up) for the first time since 1992. “The return of this conference is not only significant for this week, but for the next three to five years, they’re going to be selling San Francisco for us,” said Joe D’Alessandro, President and CEO of the association. “I think it’s huge for our economy, and we’re talking in the hundreds of millions of dollars…not only people staying at the hotels but visiting all of the difference hospitality venues, the restaurants, the events, and then enjoying of course the great weather that we have as well,” Mayor Ed Lee said. On the Market: Pacific Heights: The Lights Are On, No One’s Home

May 25, 2011 in Uncategorized

At some point in the past- possibly in 2007- 2288 Broadway #2, was offered for $3,995,000. Lo-fi, somewhat depressing, but with amazing views, the full-floor co-operative apartment then underwent an overwrought, no-surface-left-untouched renovations, very much in the style of a Presidential suite at a Four Seasons, which may or may not be an improvement over the previous Motel-6 look. With more recessed halogen fixtures than you can shake a martini at. The 3-bedroom, 3.5-bath, 2-car parking unit at the corner of Broadway and Fillmore Streets is now back on the market for $5,995,000 as of last Friday- although it’s probably been quietly shopped a bit beforehand- and the HOAs are $2945 a month, which of course includes both 24-hour security and 24-hour light-bulb changing.

The co-op also owns an empty lot immediately to the east, a buffer from the Catholic school/wedding mill/catering hall/traffic clusterfuck in the same block. As per usual, candidates for admission to the all-cash, circa 1957 building must be approved by the board of directors- you’ll own shares and get a proprietary lease. Helping Others: The Trevor Project Moves Into Harvey Milk’s Castro Camera Store

May 25, 2011 in Uncategorized

5-23-11harvey-milk-castro-camera.jpg575 Castro Street is the location of what once was gay rights activist Harvey Milk’s Castro Camera store. The shop would get daily calls from struggling youths who were trying to come to terms with their sexuality. “He would say (to the callers), ‘You’ve got to have hope,’” said Anne Kronenberg, Milk’s campaign manager. The Trevor Project–a nonprofit that provides suicide prevention and crisis counseling to GLBT youth– opened a call center in the back of the Human Rights Campaign store that now occupies Milk’s former office space. “It’s probably very similar to Harvey in that we listen to them without judgement and try to figure out what’s going on with them at that time,” interim executive director David McFarland said. Dustin Lance Black, the Oscar-winning screenwriter of the film “Milk,” came up with the idea for the center with gay rights activist Cleve Jones about six months ago, Black said. San Francisco Board of Supervisors President David Chiu and state Senator Mark Leno, D-San Francisco, were on hand yesterday to present the Harvey Milk call center with proclamations of commendation from the city and state. “This proclamation thanks the Trevor Project for all the lives they have saved,” Leno said. That they’re doing it at Harvey’s old desk really moves the spirit.”

On the Market: Get Your Sort Of Art Deco On in Miraloma Park

May 25, 2011 in Uncategorized

Alright, so the exterior of this home is a vanilla version of Art Deco. But would you look at that bathroom! Never remodel it, please. San Francisco has enough Corian countertops and brushed steel plumbing fixtures.

This 3-bed, 2-bath, 1,250 square foot home in Miraloma Park landed on the market over the weekend. Asking price? $965,000. Highlights: it’s got one spacious living room; the dining room has a wall of almost floor-to-ceiling windows; there’s a central patio and the backyard’s so whimsical that we’d like to throw a tea party in it. Lowlights include questionable flooring in the kitchen and a very odd master bedroom (the walls and ceiling are finished the same, there’s an awkward fireplace). There’s 2-car parking in the garage.

Footloose: Reminiscent of our favorite Kevin Bacon…

May 25, 2011 in Uncategorized

1283782817-kevin-bacon_footloose.jpgReminiscent of our favorite Kevin Bacon movie, Nob Hill neighbors apparently hate music and dancing. The NIMBYs of Nob Hill failed, previously, to convince the Board of Supervisors to prevent more use at the Masonic Center, which they fear will turn their well-heeled nabe into something resembling an actual city. A judge recently pushed the changes at the center into full environmental review, delaying indefinitely Live Nation’s plans. Score one for the NIMBYs. This puts us in the strange position of rooting for Live Nation, adder of concert fees, who merely wants to remodel the Center to allow for more standing (dancing) space, get a full-time liquor license, and run the venue many more times per year. Real Estate Sold: Hipster cred goes over asking: that…

May 25, 2011 in Uncategorized

2011_05_23_outersunset_tiny.jpgHipster cred goes over asking: that very sweet renovation in the Outer Sunset sold for $715,000, a bonus of $26,000 for the sellers. Sixty days from listing to close of escrow, the stylish 3-bed, 1-bath, 2-car garage, solar-paneled house garnered twenty-six comments when we first posted it- mostly about “hipsters” and “fog”. With its small but urban-chicken-ready yard, is this the harbinger of a new westward migration? [Curbed SF]

The Champs: Honoring the SF Giants History (and World Series Win!)

May 25, 2011 in Uncategorized

5-23-11giants.jpgSan Francisco Giants team officials announced Friday that the long journey to win the World Series will be commemorated by a World Champions Walk. “The 2010 World Series title was the culmination of more than five decades of memorable moments, historic games and hundreds of legendary players who have worn the San Francisco Giants uniform,” Giants president Larry Baer said in a statement. The walkway will encircle all four plazas of AT&T Park. The walk will also include brick pavers that fans can purchase to mark their own memories of the team’s history. The brick pavers will be sold for $225 to $475, depending on the location, team officials said.
