For Shame!: Someone’s gone and stole a parklet!…

May 25, 2011 in Uncategorized

5-23-11parklet.jpgSomeone’s gone and stole a parklet! Actual Cafe in Berkeley Oakland had its staff and tons of volunteers help create a parklet, and then “the parklet was moved between 5:40 and 6p.m. on May 18th, on a white Subaru wagon, license plate 4UEG667,” said Sal and the team at Actual Cafe. “We have surveillance footage of the car and two individuals (one man, one woman) but can’t see them actually loading them parket,” Sal added. “But one of our neighbors saw and wrote down their plate number.” Actual Cafe has started a Facebook page asking for help to get the missing parklet back to where it belongs. Under 500K Club: Problematic Marina Studio Is Packed Full of Charm

May 25, 2011 in Uncategorized

The difficult news: it’s a short sale. Make sure your agents has expertise in negotiating a short sale if you’re interested in this place. Moving on… it’s a studio apartment in the Marina. It’s been on and off the market and for almost two years, and we’re quite smitten by it. Look at that pink bathroom! It’s adorable. And at $410,000, it’s the newest member of our Under 500K Club. At 547 square feet, we think it’s fair to call this studio a large unit or perhaps even a junior one bedroom. Hard to say without floorplan porn. There’s 1-car parking in the garage and monthly HOA dues are $400.

Renderporn From Palo Alto: Stanford Hospital: Baby Steps as Hospital Moves Forward

May 25, 2011 in Uncategorized

It’s only been four years, but in planning years, the merest blip in time, as Stanford University tries to expand its hospital into a complex encompassing the medical school, Stanford Hospital and the Lucille Packard Children’s Hospital. They’ve already expanded on the 1960′s-vintage facility by Edward Durell Stone, which will demolished at some point in the future for failure to meet current seismic standards. The new complex, designed by Rafael Viñoly, is expected to break ground this year, and this week Stanford seems to have hammered out a deal with Palo Alto to get the project going- a deal which will probably include a fund for future preservation projects.

Stone started his project at Stanford 1959 and went on to design a public library in Palo Alto as well as the city hall, a forerunner of New York’s iconic GM Building- now better known for its mid-plaza Apple Store. Stone’s work is not very popular these days, despite the resurgent interest in Mid-Century Modern, and his Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. is subject to regular, ongoing derision; his museum for Huntington Hartford in New York underwent a controversial renovation. Stanford remains a virtual survey of 20th Century American architecture and is well worth a visit if that’s how you roll, and Stone’s low-slung hospital is an interesting artifact.

That’s Rather Large: That’s a Whole Lotta Kitchen

May 25, 2011 in Uncategorized

We were doing our hourly browse of the listings this morning when we came across 674 15th Avenue in the Richmond. Everything’s fine and good; it’s a 3-bed, 2-bath Edwardian that recently underwent a remodel. And then we saw the mega kitchen. Tell us, dear readers, how much kitchen is too much kitchen? While we’re quite fond of spending an evening tootling around the kitchen and spending big bucks at places like Sur La Table (“of course we need a three tier water dispenser and a chocolate fountain!”), we worry that whoever nabs this place will have a hard time filling all those cabinets and drawers. That said, the kitchen is gorgeous and we’d love to cook a feast in it. But what about you? Too big? Not big enough? Is there “no such thing as too much kitchen”? Cast your vote below!

Teach Me How to Dougie: Nudity, iPad apps, and LED lights,…

May 25, 2011 in Uncategorized

BlissDance05.18.11.jpgNudity, iPad apps, and LED lights, oh my! A sculpture of a woman in the buff getting her dance on, called “Bliss Dance,” has been installed over on Treasure Island. She’s all light up inside by a thousand LED lights which can be controlled by an iPad app. It’s all very cool, even if it is stereotypically San Franciscan. Thanks for not using incandescents and a Windows tablet, bro. [SF Appeal]

Mission Accomplished: This year’s Bay to Breakers! It…

5-20-11baytobreak.jpgThis year’s Bay to Breakers! It was a success. At least according to Mayor Ed Lee, who announced yesterday that the race was a success because of collaboration with neighborhoods affected by the race, a greater emphasis on public safety and less required cleanup. “The City and race organizers have worked hard to make sure that this uniquely San Francisco celebration was a fun and safe race, ensuring that the Bay to Breakers tradition will be here for years to come,” Lee said in a statement. Temporary Sidewalk Closure: On May 29, the west sidewalk…

May 25, 2011 in Uncategorized

5-20-11GGB.jpgOn May 29, the west sidewalk of the Golden Gate Bridge, which is reserved for bicyclists and open on weekdays, is closing for four months for seismic repairs. It’ll makes for more congestion, as the east sidewalk is already clogged with tourists and cyclists, especially on sunny weekends. This is why the Board of Directors is flirting with the idea of imposing a speed limit for bikes on the bridge. The board is also looking at a way to stripe the east sidewalk to help keep the cyclists and pedestrians somewhat separate. “It’s definitely going to make for an interesting summer,” said Mary Currie, a bridge district spokeswoman.
