Fairmont Hotel Goes Up For Sale, But Tonga Room May Be Around for Quite a Bit Longer

It seems like it’s been years that we’ve been talking about the possible demise of the Tonga Room (it has). We’ve followed the ups and downs of a developer’s plans to raze the rear section and tower portion of the building and destroy the great and glorious temple of Tiki that is Tonga, which is only lacking in decent cocktails and edible food. But news comes today that the Fairmont Hotel’s current ownership, having lost their battle to build some condos, have put the hotel on the market, and it’s likely it’s going to sit there for a while. There are now four hotels on the market within three blocks of each other, as the Chron reports: the Mark Hopkins, the Stanford Court, the Huntington Court, and now the Fairmont. All have been hurt by downtown convention business, but all have spectacular views of the city! [Chron]

Within the next few days, the city will begin a pilot program to reduce pedestrian congestion on Powell Street near Union Square. Audi is picking up the initial bill for removing all the parking spaces on Powell between Geary and Ellis to provide for expanded walkways, custom furniture, and potted plants. The project will be completed in mid-July and has a six-month pilot time frame — but we could see more room to walk past Christmas if the program proves popular. For the only time this year, the AC45 wing-sailed catamaran will sail in San Francisco at 1 p.m., organizers said Which means grab a sandwich and head to Crissy Field for lunch. The big, shiny and multi-hulled AC45s will be working through the race route this afternoon after a private shindig at the Golden Gate Yacht Club, and the long Crissy Field bayfront should prove perfect for viewing. The world’s 3rd wealthiest person and legendary investor holds a yearly auction where the lucky winner gets to bring up to seven friends to a lunch with Buffett at New York City’s Smith & Wollensky steakhouse. “We are thrilled and astonished by Mr. Buffett and the winning bidder for their generosity and philanthropy, which allows Glide to continue to help those of society’s margins transform their lives,” Glide Founder the Rev.
