Turf Wars: Squatter’s Rights in Presidio Heights

August 28, 2011 in Uncategorized

8-26-11house.jpgThe Examiner reports that a house left abandoned in posh Presidio Heights belongs to Nigerian government, and was used a consulate up until 1989. The neighbors have been reporting squatters and general disrepair, but only recently heard from the government that they plan to use it again in the future. Maybe this is all just the next scam following all those money transfers from dopes who believed their emails: buy a fancy house, and then get your neighbors to pay for all the upkeep. Good news for the neighbors: the Nigerian government has stationed security guards to keep people from squatting and the state department is going to meet with the Nigerian embassy to get this all sorted out. We’re personally hoping it ends up on the market as we would love to see the inside of this formerly-fancy sh%&shack on Jackson.

August 28, 2011 in Uncategorized

8-26-11race.jpgWe’d suggest avoiding the Embarcadero, Fisherman’s Wharf, Fort Mason and the Presidio tomorrow (Saturday) morning. Unless, of course, you’re running a marathon. The 2011 Giant Race will send an expected 10,000 participants running Saturday morning at 8am, and will close city streets and affect bus routes. All road closures are expected to reopen by 1pm, SFMTA spokesman Paul Rose said. [SF Appeal]

Fighting the Bank: The Bay Citizen brings us word…

August 28, 2011 in Uncategorized

8-25-11fore.jpgThe Bay Citizen brings us word of a woman in Berkeley who lost her home of 27 years to foreclosure, and then fought to get it back. Tanya Dennis hired a locksmith so that she could break back into her home, and then squatted in it until it became hers again. Friends rallied, a shareholders meeting was disrupted and 1,500 emails were sent to Wells Fargo demanding that the bank negotiate, amongst other tactics. And it worked! The bank says its going to reduce her principal balance by “more than $100,000.” “If we can resolve this situation, I think everyone will be happy,” said Wells Fargo spokesman Tom Goyda. Turf Wars: Chinatown: It’s Never Too Early to Complain About Double-Parking

Via Streetsblog, news of work being done, plans being made, and surveys being taken to solve the seemingly intractable problem of getting across Broadway- between Columbus and Stockton Streets- unbloodied and with dignity intact. And that’s in the crosswalks. The Planning Commission’s come up with three alternatives which basically narrow the roadway in favor of bulb-outs or widened sidewalks with trees.

One proposal eliminates curbside parking in favor of loading zones, but they seem to ignore the fact that humans will double-park any time they don’t see a representative of the law. The bike-partisan commentors at Streetblog also weigh in on the trouble of getting through the tunnel- although why they can’t just go over the hill remains unanswered, plus it’s a different problem, not involving someone’s granny being run over. But check out the proposals and take the survey.

Pretty in Orange: "The original coating system has lasted…

August 28, 2011 in Uncategorized

8-25-11ggb.jpg“The original coating system has lasted really well considering how long the bridge has been here,” said Rocky Dellarocca, paint supervisor. “It has been touched up through the years, but this is the first time the whole thing will be done.” That’s right, folks. The Golden Gate Bridge cables are receiving its first complete paint job in 75 years. It’ll take up to four years and require close to 10,000 gallons of paint. Why will it take so long? “We haven’t been able to put a coat down in 14 days,” said bridge painter Ronald Chatham. “It’s been too wet and it won’t stick.” Cue fog horns. Behind in the Rent: Audit Discovers Thousands of $$$ in Unpaid French Fries

In more shocking news from Sacramento, the Chronicle reports that an audit of the State Lands Commission- the peeps who manage leases of state land- found that in a sampling of thirty-five properties (out of over a thousand leases) the commission had failed to collect revenue of $8,200,000 or reappraise the properties for increases. Biggest offender in the study is Crockett Marine Services under the Carquinez Bridge, which also operates the Nantucket Restaurant, a waterfront fish & chips dive loved by those who love waterfront dives, fish & chips, and the steady thrum of traffic overhead. Failing to pay rent since 1989, they currently owe $662,000, which comes out to about $2500 a month, or for more immediate perspective, a one-bedroom apartment in San Francisco. The matter’s been turned over to the Attorney General, but as the commission’s director says “We don’t really know what happened with this one.” Commission leases contribute about $400M annually to the general fund. The halibut and squid were both unavailable for comment.
