Desperate Times: San Jose is so broke, that…

August 28, 2011 in Uncategorized

8-24-11dog.jpgSan Jose is so broke, that it’s cutting its $60,000 annual tab for stocking city parks with disposable bags for dog owners who don’t bring their own. “There’s little messes out there, more than there used to be,” said Tim Muller. “You take the bags away and it doesn’t take long.” But not all hope is lost, lazy San Jose dog owners. Friends of the San Jose Rose Garden has started taking tax-deductible donations to help the city stock the bag dispensers. [Mercury News/photo via potential past]

The deal still has to be approved by the Board of Supervisors in October, but our favorite little Mission park is on its way- completely funded by outside sources. Asphalt to lawn by 2013. A former Exotic Erotic Ball producer has been sentenced to 30 days in jail for writing bad checks to pay for the 2009 Cow Palace event. Howard Mark Mauskopf pleaded no contest to charges that he wrote bad checks and used fake credit cards to pay for the Exotic Erotic Ball. He wrote two $5,000 checks to the manager of the band “Missing Persons,” which bounced. He also used fake credit cards to pay for their hotel stay. [S Examiner]

Funnel Cakes?: The city council has also said…

2011_08_23_plymouth_acup_tiny1.jpgThe city council has also said a major programme of entertainment will offer visitors all they could want, including live music, food, shopping and a race simulator. Plymouth (that would be England, not Massachusetts) hosts the second of the America’s Cup World Series races in mid-September, and it sounds like a test run for the races planned in for San Francisco in 2012 and 2013, especially since it takes place within Plymouth Sound rather than the open ocean. With thousands of fans expected along the shoreline. We’ll keep you up to speed on the races and the inevitable post-mortem from the other side of the pond. [link and image via BBC News]

On the Market: Green Living takes Plenty of Green in Los Altos Hills

August 28, 2011 in Uncategorized

Salivation brought to you today by 11885 Francemont Avenue, a Los Altos Hills contemporary sunning itself upon a 7-acre parcel. Though the property’s history shows a bit of up and down since 2003, (including a current stint on the market of over 120 days), the home is currently billed as a “newly constructed contemporary masterpiece,” leading us to the conclusion that the soaring openness we see here is a new incantation. The home itself offers close to 5,500 square feet: 5 bedrooms and 5.5 baths, most of it floored in polished wood and walled with glass. In a redundancy of riches, the listing boasts a living room, family rooms and a rec room/home theater, as well as both full indoor and outdoor kitchens. The “200+ Green Point rating” refers to sustainable materials employed, not to the envy one might experience in viewing. We can’t imagine why this place hasn’t sold yet– aside from the fact that it’s listed for $4,995,000. – Anna Marie

Park Renovations: Cabrillo Playground Renovation Features Pirate Ship

August 28, 2011 in Uncategorized

Isn’t it wonderful when public park planning processes can glide along smoothly? This Saturday, community members are coming together to celebrate the seemingly-uncontroversial renovation of the Cabrillo Playground. Perhaps the vitriol has been muted because no one can find it out there amongst the fog. But the more likely reason is that there’s something in the park for everyone. In addition to the requisite basketball courts and tennis (bike polo?) court, preservationists will be happy that Rec & Park is upgrading the 1930’s clubhouse (and keeping the exact same facade). There will also be age-appropriate play areas, including one with a pirate ship. Now the only limit to indulging your (child’s) pirate fantasy is your imagination. Construction is set to begin in spring 2012, with plans to reopen the playground in spring of 2013. – Michael Pearce

Real Estate Sold: South Park Loft Makes a Quick Exit From the MLS

August 28, 2011 in Uncategorized

8-23-11kitchen.jpgWe first told you about unit #7 at 10 South Park earlier this month. The 1-bed, 2-bath loft was asking $795,000. We gushed about the location, but questioned the kitchen remodel, which is… highly specific. Commenters chimed in and said things like “that kitchen is just for porn,” and “fancy finishes don’t necessarily pay off, and tend to look out of place on lofts.” We agreed. However, we’re very happy to report that although the kitchen has a very unique style, it didn’t stop this condo from selling less than a month after it was listed. 10 South Park #7 sold for $785,000 last week, only $10,000 under asking. Congrats to the lucky buyer!
